Philippians: Return to Joy

Return to Joy - our theme for the study of Paul's Letter to the Philippians.  Paul wrote this letter while in prison.  Yet in the midst of adverse circumstances, Paul knows the "secret" (as he puts it) to joy. You will find that the Letter to the Philippians is a short, positive and practical guide to Christian living.  All you need for this course is your Bible and a desire to know more about God through His Word. No prior Bible knowledge in necessary to get the most out this course.  This course is being taught by Ross Slaughter.

BANNER MAKING

From ancient times, banners have been used as signals in battle to rally troops and announce the arrival of monarchs or generals. Old Testament references to banners attest to their significance in their history of God’s chosen people. The earliest reference, Exodus 17:15, says that “Moses built an alter( to commemorate the Israelite victory over the Amalekites) and called it The Lord is my banner.” Centeries later, Isaiah announced in reference to the coming Messiah: “In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples; the nations will rally to Him and His place of rest will be glorious… He will raise a banner for the nations and gather the exiles of Israel. There are a few more scriptures that can be discussed in class.

In Old Testament times banners were more than decorative cloth hangings. They inspired people, marked the culmination of events, and most important, signified the presence of God.

Today, we see banners displayed outside homes and along streets, adding beauty to our world. In places of worship, they mark the liturgical seasons, many topics, and create a worshipful atmosphere.

In this class we will introduce to you different ways to get ideas for banners and different techniques to apply fabric etc. to your banner. The plan is to demonstrate these various techniques and give you an opportunity to make smaller versions. This way you will gain the confidence to go on and make your own banners, for worship, your home, club or group, or even for sports teams or parades.

Some skills needed for this class are a little patience, a steady hand for cutting and tracing, and careful attention for directions. Bring you own sharp scissors. Cost for this session(10 weeks) is $10.00.  Led by Zonna Fenn.
